Log Home Restoration in Chewelah

This past fall of 2025 We completed a thorough restoration of this Log Home using Sashco Products. We media blasted, treated it with borate, applied “Colorfast” primer, “Capture” stain, “Cascade” clear-coat, and repainted all of the trim. We then did a full chink using “Log Jam” between all of the logs.  The home was beginning to show signs of decay and rotting in areas, but we were able to stop the damage from occurring before it got out of hand. The home will be significantly more HVAC efficient since we did the full chink job on the entire home, as well as having less entryways for bugs and bats to potentially enter the home.

This home had both full log style construction and cedar siding in areas. We are able to treat both styles of exterior in the same way using our precise media blaster to remove the previous stain. After we media blasted this home in Chewelah, we applied a very heavy coat of Borate. The Borate is an insecticide and a fungicide agent that gets rid of and pre-existing bugs and prevents any new wood boring insects from entering the wood. It also helps to prevent fungus or mildew growth. After the borate had plenty of time to dry on this log home in Chewelah, we were able to begin the staining process. The staining begins with 1 full coat of Colorfast from Sashco. Colorfast is a Clear pre-stain base coat that acts like a sealer. Colorfast helps to prevent blotchiness and provide a smoother surface for the coats of stain and clear coat. It helps to fill pores in the wood.

The colorfast generally only takes a couple hours to dry. on warm days on small houses we can ofter apply both Colorfast and the first coat of Capture in one day. On this project, the job was a little bit bigger than average. So the next day after colorfast was applied, we sprayed on the Capture stain. The Capture stain is the color coat. On this home, we used “Red Cedar” for the color. On most homes, we will apply 2 coats of capture stain. Usually the first coat does 90 parent of the coverage, and the second coat dials it in so it is perfectly consistent. The final step of the staining process is Sashco’s Cascade Clear coat. The Cascade clear comes in either a Matte finish or a Semi-gloss. It is the hard outer shell of the coating that protects the logs from abrasion, and forms a thin membrane to prevent water intrusion.

After all of the stain products had a proper amount if time to fully cure, we went back and re-painted all of the trim, facias, gutters, and doors. We then took on the full chink project. The chinking on this house took us approximately 5 days to complete. The chinking process is meticulous. We have to finely tune every inch of chink so that it looks perfect, but also attaches to the wood properly. We generally have a 3 man crew that constantly works each chink line so that they come out absolutely perfect.

Chewelah Log Home Restoration – Before and After

In these photos you can see the freshly blasted logs and what they look like next to the finished product. The logs came out fantastic and the chinking between the logs really makes the project pop! in the photos below you can see the sunburn damage beginning to occur on the tops of the logs. We were able to blast all of the sunburn away and apply the new coatings so that the logs are properly sealed and protected from the elements.

We don’t.
