Services provided to Western Montana

  • Media Blasting
The first log home restoration service we provide in Thompson Falls Montana is media blasting. Media blasting your log home is the first step in performing a proper restoration of your log home. Media blasting will remove previous stains, mildew, dirt, paint, or any other substance that is currently on the surface of your logs. it is the only way to 100% ensure that your logs are perfectly clean, and that your new coat of stain will adhere properly.

Normally, we will prep your log home by laying out tarps, and covering your windows to protect them from the blasting. we will also remove all the light fixtures and other decorations from the walls of your home. We generally will turn your air conditioning units off and cover them with tarps to protect them also. Once the whole home is properly prepped, we will start the blasting.

  • Borate treatment
After the media blasting is completed, we will apply “Borate” to you logs. Borate is a log preservative that will help to kill fungus spores and insects, and prevent mildew and bugs from coming after your home in the future. it is an essential process of the log home restoration, because you can only apply it after the home has been media blasted. If you apply borate to your logs without them being media blasted, the borate will not properly absorb into the logs. Follow this Link to get more information on the borate product that we use.
  • Sanding and Osborn Brushing
In order to provide a smooth and polished surface, we hand sand and Osborn brush the logs after we are finished with the media blasting. The amount of sanding your logs require will vary depending on the type of wood, the age, sun exposure, and how much stain was previously on the logs. the hand sanding part of the restoration is extremely labor intensive, but a worthy task to ensure that your logs have the most beautiful finish possible after the stain
  • Staining
After we have completed all of the prep work, we are ready for the staining. At North Idaho Log Home Restoration, we employ the airless spray and buckbrush technique to apply stain. this method provides the most consistent stain finish on your logs. if you just use a stain brush too apply stain, you will end up with a blocky, inconsistent finish. Because we spray our finish, we have to take great care in protecting your home. prior to the spraying, we mask all of your windows, decks, driveways, and other items surrounding your home to protect from overspray. Then, we have the back brusher carry cleanup materials so we can immediately cleanup anything that we need to. after spraying hundreds of homes, we know all of the things to look out for and how to properly prepare for potential challenges.
The stain material we use on all of our log home restorations is Sashco’s Capture Stain and Cascade Clear-Coat. We have found these products to leave the best finish on your logs and to be the most user friendly for future coats of stain. When it comes to maintenance, all that you need to do is apply a coat clear, and your logs should hold the same stain color for many years. With other products, every time you add a coat of stain, the color of the logs becomes darker and more solid overtime. We can avoid that issue and extend the life of your log home restoration by using coats of clear instead of coats of pigmented stain.
  • Rot Repair
Sometimes when logs are neglected over an extended period of time, they begin to rot. Usually, this is caused by excessive exposure to water, neglecting maintenance, or insects entering into the logs. When rot happens, we are often tasked with cutting the previous rotten log out, and replacing the log with a new section of log. This is not something we would recommend to a newbie or someone without experience. This process requires chainsaws, grinders, and hydraulic jacks to safely remove the previous log and to properly insert the new wood. North Idaho Log Home Restoration is experienced and well equipped to handle rot repair projects and have completed the work all over western Montana in the past.
