St. Maries Log Home Restoration

This Log Home in St. Maries Idaho was in really poor condition prior to the owner purchasing the property. They purchased it as a major project anticipating a complete rebuild.

We were brought in to media blast, treat with borate, stain, and seal the logs on this home. After we completed our portion of the work, the owner planned to finish the rest of the construction themselves.

As you can see from the before photos, this log home in St. Maries had not been properly maintained for decades. The logs did not appear to have any remaining stain left on them. It is very possible that nobody had ever sealed the logs at all. It was truly a miracle that the home did not have significant rot issues due to the lack of maintenance. After we worked our magic, these logs are properly protected and will live on for many years to come.

    Log Home Maintenance

When log homes are not properly maintained, several issues can arise that may compromise their structural integrity, aesthetics, and overall functionality. Here are three common consequences of neglecting log home maintenance:

    • Wood Rot and Decay:
      • Issue: Failure to address moisture-related problems, such as leaks, unchecked water infiltration, or improper sealing, can lead to wood rot and decay in log homes. Moisture promotes the growth of fungi and bacteria that break down the wood fibers, compromising the strength and integrity of the logs.
      • Consequence: Structural damage is a significant risk. Rotted logs can weaken the overall frame of the home, potentially leading to sagging walls, compromised support, and safety concerns. In addition to structural issues, decay can affect the visual appeal of the log home.
    • Insect Infestations:
      • Issue: Lack of regular inspections and preventive measures can result in insect infestations, including termites, carpenter ants, beetles, and other wood-boring pests. These insects can damage the wood, creating tunnels and nesting spaces within the logs.
      • Consequence: Insect infestations can lead to structural weaknesses, as the pests feed on and tunnel through the wood. Left unaddressed, these issues can escalate, causing extensive damage and potentially rendering the log home unsafe for habitation.
    • Cracking and Checks:
      • Issue: Logs naturally expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. Without proper maintenance, this natural movement can lead to the development of cracks, checks, and gaps in the wood. This is especially true if the home has not been adequately sealed or if the protective finishes have deteriorated.
      • Consequence: Cracks and checks in the logs can compromise the home’s insulation, allowing air and moisture infiltration. This can lead to increased energy costs, decreased comfort levels inside the home, and further deterioration of the logs over time. In addition, the aesthetic appeal of the log home may be negatively affected.

Addressing these issues promptly through regular maintenance, inspections, and necessary repairs is crucial to preserving the longevity and appearance of a log home. Implementing a proactive maintenance plan that includes sealing, staining, and addressing any signs of water damage or insect activity can help prevent these common problems and ensure the continued health and durability of the log structure.
